Some legends don’t get the history lessons they deserve. This is one of them. 47 years ago this week, Afghanistan lost Ahmad Zahir — the “Elvis of the East.” June 14th was both the day he was born AND the day he was killed at just 33, on his own birthday. A prime minister’s son who gave his privileged life to sing. The man who turned Rumi and Hafez into pop anthems, defied a dictatorship, and was murdered for refusing to be silenced. NPR still names him one of the 50 greatest voices on Earth.
