‘He said it wasn’t his car — but couldn’t say who it belonged to.’ During an early morning patrol check in Newhall, a deputy spotted a man with a Hyundai Accent parked at a car wash. It wouldn’t have seemed unusual, except it was 4:15 a.m. The deputy contacted the man to check on his welfare. As the deputy got closer, he observed loose wires coming from the steering column and signs the ignition had been tampered with. The man was also found in possession of a shaved key. The deputy ultimately arrested the 47-year-old Van Nuys man on felony auto theft charges. Further investigation revealed the suspect had prior arrests related to vehicle theft and grand theft.
