Today was such a beautiful day as Black Pride New Orleans officially kicks off. Seeing Mayor Helena Moreno present a proclamation to Nikki Alexander-Tumblins was a powerful reminder of just how much impact one person can have on an entire community. Nikki, what you have done for our LGBTQ+ community never goes unnoticed. Year after year, people travel from across the country and around the world to celebrate Black Pride in New Orleans, but what you’ve built is so much bigger than an event. You’ve created a space where people feel safe, accepted, celebrated, and loved exactly as they are. I experienced my first Pride four years ago, and it was the first time I truly felt comfortable in my own skin. That feeling stays with you forever, and there are countless people who share that same experience because of the foundation you’ve built.
