While football fans around the world have their eyes on the World Cup, China's local football leagues are finding their own ways to capture public attention.
During a recent match in the Fujian Super League, or "Minchao," in the city of Quanzhou, a uniquely dressed cheer squad stole the spotlight with a halftime performance in the rain.
Known as "Shijing Shizhou Ren" ("People of the Ten Continents"), the performance draws inspiration from Quanzhou's golden age during the Song and Yuan dynasties, when the city, known to foreign traders as Zayton, was one of the world's busiest ports and a major hub of the Maritime Silk Road.
Dressed as merchants from different parts of the world, the performers brought history to life on the football pitch, blending sport, culture and heritage in a colorful display. Videos of the performance quickly spread online, turning the cheer squad into a national sensation.
