Happy 54th Birthday, Title IX. Fifty-four years ago, 37 words changed the landscape of education and sport in America. What followed wasn't inevitable. It took athletes who demanded opportunities. Coaches who built programs from the ground up. Administrators who challenged the status quo. Advocates who refused to accept "that's the way it's always been." It took resilience and grit. Together, Title IX and the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) fueled one of the most significant movements in sports history. By 1980, the AIAW had grown to nearly 1,000 member institutions and provided participation opportunities for approximately 125,000 college women across 35 national championships in 17 sports.
