She was six when she started work in a Leeds flax mill. By thirteen, her body was deformed. Elizabeth Bentley worked from 5am to 9pm — strapped when she slowed, beaten when late. The work bent her bones: “I pulled my bones out of their places,” she told Parliament in 1832. Workers who gave evidence were sacked for it.
