They were the children nobody wanted. Nearly 200 never came back.
In 1849 Bartholomew Drouet was paid by the head for London’s pauper children — so he crammed 1,400 into a “school” at Tooting. When cholera came, 180 died. The jury said manslaughter; the judge directed an acquittal, and Drouet walked free.
