Some of these women could only be identified by their false teeth.
In August 1917 a fire and explosion tore through the Ajax Chemical Works in Barking. Of 16 women at the benches, 13 died. The inquest jury found the explosives stored in their room and the door opening inwards — yet no one was blamed, and there’s still no memorial.
