The human Y chromosome evolved from an ordinary chromosome and lost many genes because it rarely recombines, allowing mutations and genetic drift to accumulate. Despite this reduction, evidence suggests its gene content has been stable for millions of years, so extinction is unlikely soon. If changes occur over immense timescales, evolution could favor new sex determining mechanisms. Scientists view the Y chromosome as changing slowly rather than disappearing.
