Although he is now celebrated as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Henri Matisse didn’t achieve widespread recognition until he was 35 years old. Between 1904 and 1905, Matisse experienced a major artistic breakthrough during summer trips to the Mediterranean village of Collioure in the south of France with fellow artist and collaborator André Derain. Inspired by the brilliance of the Mediterranean light, he embraced pure, unmixed color and expressive brushwork.
