#Learnedhelplessness”is a psychological state in which a person believes they have little or no control over outcomes after repeatedly experiencing failure, punishment, or uncontrollable events. As a result, they may stop trying to change their situation even when opportunities for success become available. First identified by psychologist Martin Seligman, the concept helps explain behaviors seen in depression, anxiety, academic underachievement, and chronic stress. People with learned helplessness often show reduced motivation, passivity, low self-confidence, and pessimism. Treatment typically involves building mastery experiences, enhancing perceived control, and challenging negative beliefs.
