Bathing time is HARD. For many older adults — especially those living with dementia, mobility challenges, or sensory sensitivity — the bathing process can trigger anxiety, stress, and resistance. For caregivers or loved ones, this can be physically challenging and emotionally stressful.
Bathing is one of the core Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) that we all do. Bathing requires balance, coordination, cognitive sequencing, and a high level of physical exposure. For people with mobility challenges, bathing can be extra arduous.
One aspect to improve the bathing experience is to better understand the ways clothing or coverage choice can impact behavior. Maintaining coverage during bathing can dramatically reduce a loved one’s concerns with modesty. When we are able to protect ones’ dignity, we are able to encourage them into the bath.
