When Nekai Foster took his first independent steps again, it was a moment no one in the room will ever forget.
After surviving gun violence, Nekai faced a long and uncertain journey through trauma, rehabilitation and recovery, supported every step of the way by his family and care team at Holland Bloorview.
Today, his story is captured in the award-winning documentary Nekai Walks.
“I just want to shout out the staff. They’re amazing. My experience was a 10 out of 10,” Nekai shared.
But his story is also a call for change. Reflecting more broadly, Nekai added:
“Gun violence is happening too often, especially impacting Black youth and I want to see it come to an end.”
🎬 Nekai Walks, winner of the Rogers Audience Award at Hot Docs 2026, will be released on TVO this September.
