Every chrome bumper, gold connector and zinc-coated bolt passed through a tank where electrons did the work that no mechanical process could. Industrial electroplating is electrochemistry at scale, and the physics is unforgiving. The governing rule is Faraday’s law: mass deposited equals (I·t·M)/(n·F), where F is 96,485 C/mol. Push 1,000 amps through a nickel bath at full efficiency and you lay down roughly 1.1 kg of nickel an hour. But “full efficiency” is the lie. Hydrogen evolution steals current, so real cathode efficiency for bright nickel sits near 95 percent, for hard chrome closer to 12-18 percent. Most of your energy boils water. The hard part is uniformity. Current follows the path of least resistance, so it crowds onto edges and corners, starving recesses. Engineers fight this with: - Throwing power, quantified by the Wagner number, balancing kinetic against ohmic resistance - Auxiliary anodes and thieves to redistribute the field - Conforming shields and robbers to choke...
