What I learned about resource guarding from training Murphy ⤵️ I stopped looking at it as if it was something I could fix. Resource guarding is an inherent trait that I’m going to work with, not against. Just because a dog is prone to resource guarding doesn’t mean that the dog is not also capable of understanding value transfer for other items. If I can condition markers, work on value transfers, avoid direct conflict, then oftentimes I can come up a management system that works for these dogs. Once I decided, I was going to work with the behavior instead of against it, the whole paradigm shifted. Now my approach is teach drop starting with positive reinforcement, teach a “go to bed” behavior and teach a recall. Very soon I introduce negative reinforcement to all of these behaviors with the use of the electronic collar.
