What I learned about resource guarding from training Murphy ⤵️ I stopped looking at it as if it was something I could fix. Resource guarding is an inherent trait that I’m going to work with, not against. Just because a dog is prone to resource guarding doesn’t mean that the dog is not also capable of understanding value transfer for other items. If I can condition markers, work on value transfers, avoid direct conflict, then oftentimes I can come up a management system that works for these dogs. Once I decided, I was going to work with the behavior instead of against it, the whole paradigm shifted. Now my approach is teach drop starting with positive reinforcement, teach a “go to bed” behavior and teach a recall. Very soon I introduce negative reinforcement to all of these behaviors with the use of the electronic collar. The electronic collar allows me to interact with the without getting close to them to touch them. This takes all of the conflict out of the behavior. Interested ...
