When I lost my loved ones, I thought healing meant learning how to carry grief.
Four years later, I think it taught me something else.
It taught me how to pay attention.
To sunsets.
To conversations.
To ordinary moments I used to rush through.
To the people I still have.
I saw this word today here on Instagram:
Nepenthe.
Something that makes you forget grief or suffering.
And honestly?
I don’t want to forget.
I don’t want to erase the people I loved.
I don’t want to pretend they never existed.
What I want is to live fully enough that grief becomes part of my story instead of the whole story.
Because grief didn’t just change how I think about death.
It changed how I think about life.
Now I call my mother more often.
I tell people I love them.
I worry less about stupid things.
And I pay attention to moments that once would have passed me by.
Maybe that’s the strange gift hidden inside loss.
Not forgetting.
Remembering what matters.
