On May 21, 2026, Mayor #ZohranMamdani announced #NewYorkCity had collected over $9 million in unpaid fines from Amazon. The fines came from delivery trucks idling longer than three minutes — a city law against air pollution. Amazon had the most outstanding idling fines of any company in New York. Earlier this year, Mamdani directed the Department of Finance to pursue them. Most came from court-judged cases. “No company — no matter how large or powerful — is above the law,” Mamdani said. Amazon said many fines hadn’t reached its delivery partners due to tracking gaps. The announcement came one day after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos publicly criticized New York’s school spending.
