This painting invites a closer look at a Newar Buddhist celebration of old age and long life. "Ushnisavijaya and Celebration of Old Age (Jyatha Janko)” depicts the Bhimarata, a ceremony performed by Newar Buddhist communities of Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley to celebrate an elder who has reached the auspicious age of 77 years, 7 months, 7 days, 7 hours, and 7 minutes. Created to commemorate this milestone, the painting expresses wishes for the elder's continued long life and future well-being. Look closely and you'll find the Five Transcendent Buddhas at the top of the composition, ten astrological deities representing the passage of time, and a stupa containing the long-life deity Ushnisavijaya at its center. Along the bottom, the honored elder and family members parade through the city in a ceremonial chariot and perform religious services and offerings.
