The AI revolution isn’t just about better models. It’s also about the hardware that makes those models possible. IBM has unveiled the world’s first sub 1 nanometer (0.7nm) semiconductor research breakthrough, introducing a new 3D Nanostack architecture that stacks transistors vertically to dramatically increase computing density. The prototype packs approximately 100 billion transistors onto a chip about the size of a fingernail. According to IBM, the technology could deliver up to 50% higher performance or reduce energy consumption by as much as 70% compared with its previous 2nm research design.
