One of the biggest stories of 2026 isn’t about AI, robotics, or space. It’s about electricity. Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2026 found that clean energy sources supplied all of the world’s growth in electricity demand during 2025. Instead of fossil fuel generation increasing alongside demand, global fossil powered electricity actually declined slightly. Solar was the clear standout, contributing roughly three quarters of all new electricity generation, while rapidly growing battery storage helped make renewable energy more reliable. This doesn’t mean the world has moved beyond fossil fuels. Far from it. Coal and natural gas remain essential parts of the global energy mix. But it does suggest we’ve reached an important inflection point. For decades, economic growth meant burning more fossil fuels. That relationship is beginning to weaken.
