Even though DoorDash, Instacart, Lyft, and Uber generate billions in revenue, they use personal data and algorithms to determine how little they can pay app-based workers, with Black app-based workers most affected. These corporations exploit workers' labor, while workers absorb skyrocketing gas prices and the wear and tear on their own vehicles. No incentives. No bonuses. No benefits. Black unemployment is alarmingly high. Black families are struggling just to make ends meet. App-based work can help fill in financial gaps, but these corporations refuse to pay their workers what they are worth. Lowballing wages is not just unfair, it’s cruel. It’s demeaning. The Empowering App-Based Workers Act can force these corporations to reveal how they use technology to determine pay. It would also guarantee workers at least 75% of what customers pay.
