On July 13, 2025, 30-year-old Xavier Hernandez was experiencing what appeared to be a mental health crisis on Interstate 10 in El Paso.

Xavier is seated. His hands are on his head. He is confused. He repeatedly pleads for help. At one point, he begs officers not to kill him.
What follows is a rapid escalation.
More officers arrive. Force is used. A struggle ensues.
Xavier Hernandez never makes it home.
The autopsy ruled his death a homicide. The cause of death was listed as asphyxia due to chest compression during law enforcement restraint. The report also documented blunt force injuries to his torso and extremities.
This video raises difficult but necessary questions:
What de-escalation efforts were attempted?
What immediate threat justified escalating the encounter?
Why are so many mental health crises still being handled primarily through force?
