I bought a share of an opal mine in northern Nevada. It takes about 12 hours to get to the mine (in the Virgin Valley, 25 miles south of Denio). The opals themselves are locked in this 14 million year old bentonite clay, which is pretty easy to dig through but can get rock solid at some points.
