BMW once made an ad about the Mercedes CEO retiring, and on the surface it looks ordinary… but it's secretly brilliant. Not because it's packed with BMW logos or big action shots. It works because it completely flips what viewers expect. The ad starts off feeling like a Mercedes commercial. It honors the retirement of legendary Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche, showing him leaving headquarters for the last time. Employees wave, people applaud, and the whole thing feels emotional and respectful. Then comes the twist. He gets home, opens his garage… and he's driving a BMW i8 Roadster.
