The Fimbul Ice Shelf sits on the western edge of Queen Maud Land. Along the coast, the shelf is approximately 300 metres thick and stable enough to support seasonal operations year after year.
This is where the S.A. Agulhas II docks. The South African polar vessel visits once each season to deliver precious supplies, making this area one of the most significant coastal access points for inland operations in the region.
The environment is stark and exposed. Average temperatures hover around -5°C, and the wind is constant. All operations are conducted under strict environmental protocols in line with the Antarctic Treaty — vital logistics, carefully managed, in one of the most sensitive ecosystems on the planet.
