No one talks about this part. You really only know this through living it. Every. Single. Day.
No one takes about the missed days.
The meltdowns.
The loneliness - being the only person who sees what it actually costs your child to walk through that gate.
The school sees him settle by 9am and tells you “he’s fine”.
Other parents nod and change the subject.
And somewhere along the way the message lands:
Maybe you’re the problem. Maybe you’re too soft.
You’re not too soft.
You’ve just been watching his nervous system do something his words can’t explain - and trusting what you see, even when no one else does.
I’m university-qualified in mental health, and I still spent over a year being told I was overreacting before I understood what I was actually looking at. We applied every single strategy and plan we were given by every single professional.
And nothing changed.
The day I learned to read her body instead of her behaviour was the day everything started to change.
