The remote Australian town of Marree – 600km north of the South Australian capital Adelaide – hosted its annual Camel Cup, a 13-race event celebrating camels first imported in the mid-19th century. Hundreds attended the spectacle in the outback town of just 65 residents. Since 1840, over 10,000 camels were brought to Australia, with many released into the wild after the 1920s. Today, the wild population is estimated between 300,000 and one million. Australia continues to export small numbers of live camels, with 68 sent to Malaysia and Indonesia so far in 2026.
