In 1798, the new U.S. Navy relied on newspaper advertisements and local rendezvous stations to recruit “able-bodied and patriotic seamen” for USS Constitution. Sailors were offered monthly pay, advance wages, and the opportunity to serve aboard one of the nation’s newest warships. Recruiting was conducted face-to-face, with officers working to fill the ship’s crew before deployment. Today, the Navy uses a nationwide recruiting network supported by digital outreach, career counseling, enlistment incentives, education benefits, and specialized training programs. While the process has evolved dramatically over the past 228 years, the mission remains the same: finding those willing to serve their country at sea.
