The remote Australian town of Marree – 600km north of the South Australian capital Adelaide – hosted its annual Camel Cup, a 13-race event celebrating camels first imported in the mid-19th century.⁣ ⁣ Hundreds attended the spectacle in the outback town of just 65 residents.⁣ Since 1840, over 10,000 camels were brought to Australia, with many released into the wild after the 1920s. ⁣ ⁣ Today, the wild population is estimated between 300,000 and one million. Australia continues to export small numbers of live camels, with 68 sent to Malaysia and Indonesia so far in 2026.⁣ ⁣ Trainer Kyrraley Woodhouse noted that many racing camels are sourced from these wild herds.
