As records were lost over time, the identity of the man in this portrait was a mystery for generations.
Recent research has brought us one step closer, identifying the sitter as possibly Peter Vogelsang Sr., a prominent member of New York’s free Black community and connected to one of the most influential Black families in early American history.
Inspired by that discovery, filmmaker yectorharold imagines what it might look like if Vogelsang could direct his own portrait today.
“We built everything you see from scratch,” Hector says. “The backdrop, the chair, the costume. Everything was handmade by an incredible crew.”
