What happens from an athletic trainer lens during a collision.
When an athlete stays on the ground like this, our first job is sure there isn’t a life threatening injury.
We’re checking airway, breathing, and circulation while immediately ruling out a cervical spine injury. From there, we’re looking for signs of a concussion or more serious head injury before moving on to evaluate the shoulder, chest, or any fractures.
On the field, it’s all about ruling out the worst case scenarios first. Once we know the athlete is stable, then we can focus on treating the injury and getting them safely off the field.
