Tony McAleer is a Builder. Although a large part of Tony’s life was devoted to hate and to denying the Holocaust, Tony realized the world he was building was not the one he wanted to live in, especially not one he wanted to raise his newly born daughter in. As fate would have it, Tony’s life changed because of a counselor who turned out to be Jewish. Rather than judge him, his therapist, Dov Baron, said to Tony, “That’s what you did. That’s not who you are. I see you.” Receiving compassion from the person he expected it from least changed Tony’s life. For decades now, Tony helps lead anti-hate efforts to help others understand how extremism takes hold in the first place and how to leave it in the past. I’m proud to call him and Dov friends - all of us part of the Builders Movement. Tony’s story is a reminder that you may not change someone’s beliefs immediately, but you can change how they see you through compassion and a recognition of our shared humanity.
