#Opinion: A little over two years ago, I made a controversial claim: Democrats should gerrymander states with legislatures they control. When this opinion reached social media, people deemed me, among many other adjectives, “dumb.”
Fast forward to today: After Texas Republicans led a mid-decade redistricting campaign, Democrats responded with their own rezoning of California — exactly as I said they should. They even went on the offensive by attempting to redistrict Virginia before being thwarted by the Virginia Supreme Court because of a state constitution violation. Nonetheless, it has been genuinely inspiring for me to see the way Democrats have responded to Republican mid-decade redistricting efforts. But these newly realized redistricting wars are, of course, new. If Democrats want the upper hand in these conflicts and to be proactive as opposed to responsive, they must expand beyond the federal level.
