British history | forgotten Britain
North Wales, 1966. Ann was seventeen, unmarried, and sent away before anyone in the village could see. Her baby stayed with her for ten days. Then it didn’t. The law gave her three months to change her mind — almost no one ever did. Between 1949 and 1976, at least 185,000 babies were taken this way in England and Wales alone, from government-funded homes. In 2023, Scotland apologised: “a level of injustice hard to comprehend.” England has never delivered its own apology — only this year, finally promised one.
Scotland has said sorry. England has only promised to.
