If your front rack feels tight, uncomfortable, or impossible to hold, the problem usually isn’t just your shoulders.
For most people, limited front rack mobility comes from a combination of:
• Limited thoracic (upper back) extension
• Stiff lats and shoulders
• Limited wrist extension
• Poor movement control in these positions
If you don’t address those restrictions, you’ll end up compensating with your low back, dropping your elbows, or losing your upright position in front squats, cleans, and overhead movements.
These are a few of my favorite drills to improve your front rack mobility:
✔️ Single-arm elbow drives
✔️ Back rack elbow drives
✔️ PVC front rack opener
✔️ Banded front rack stretch
✔️ Bench thoracic opener
✔️ Double wrist extension stretch
The goal isn’t to spend 30 minutes stretching every day. Spend 5–10 focused minutes working on the areas that are actually limiting you, then reinforce that new range by getting into your front rack position and lifting through it.
