You’re inside a Paulus Potter landscape, surrounded by cows, goats, and a serene, familiar countryside. Here, Sotheby’s George Gordon spends the day in the Netherlands to recreate the beauty of Potter’s 1646 ‘Landscape with livestock and a milkmaid.’ While Potter’s landscapes may seem familiar, they are actually conjured from his own imagination and are not actual sites. He achieves this by choosing a low viewpoint, so recognizable horizon features such as church spires are absent, and by setting his scenes on gently rising ground. ‘Landscape with livestock and a milkmaid’ will head to auction at #SothebysLondon as part of Old Masters on 1 July.
