Norway became the first country to adopt a national policy committing its government to avoid purchasing products that contribute to tropical deforestation. Rather than banning all logging, the policy targets supply chains linked to rainforest destruction. Tropical forests absorb billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide, regulate rainfall through evapotranspiration, and shelter over half of the world's terrestrial species. Protecting them helps slow climate change while preserving biodiversity and stabilizing regional and global ecosystems.
