Mike Tyson was scheduled to appear on WWF television 8 years before he actually did. Tyson was set to be the special guest referee for Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage at The Main Event on NBC on February 23, 1990. Twelve days before the show, Buster Douglas knocked Tyson out in Tokyo, Tyson pulled out, and Douglas took his referee spot. Behind the scenes, Don King and Vince McMahon had reportedly discussed a Hogan vs. Tyson pay-per-view worth around $100 million, talks Bruce Prichard later confirmed were real.
Hogan talked about the match openly at the time. In March 1991, he and Tyson crossed paths on The Arsenio Hall Show, days after Tyson beat Razor Ruddock, and shared a staredown.
On the show, Hogan told Arsenio: "Mike and I talked about this thing. Everybody's interested what would happen if Mike Tyson and Hulk Hogan would lock up."
