This summer, anyone visiting the Oregon Historical Society can see the first American flag known to have been raised over Portland after Oregon became a state in 1859, carefully presented in full for one of the few times in its history. The 9-by-6-foot display of red, white and blue known as the Bills Flag was sewn together in 1861 after Kansas became the nation’s 34th state.
