Less than a month after imposing a ban on lawn watering, the second in two years, Central Iowa Water Works has returned to asking for voluntary conservation by residential customers. The mandatory restriction remains in place for commercial and governmental water users, which will see a phased transition to the 50% level as conditions improve, CIWW said in a Wednesday, July 1, news release. The ban ― which reached Stage III in CIWW's conservation plan ― had been in place since June 8 in response to potentially health-endangering levels of nitrates in the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers that were straining area utilities' capacity to treat the water for safe consumption.
