Five masked and hooded gunmen opened fire in a busy area of River North early Wednesday morning, letting off dozens of rounds, killing one man and injuring another, authorities said. Five gunmen, two armed with long-guns and the rest with handguns, jumped out of a grey Honda that pulled up on Grand Avenue and opened fire before fleeing the scene, downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly said in a statement. Reilly said, "though this was a gang-on-gang targeted 'hit' and not a random act," he requested an "increased late-hour police presence in downtown Chicago during the summer months and especially heading into the July 4th weekend." In response to Reilly's request, 18th District Police Commander Bielfeldt "promised Chicago Police will have a very significant presence in the downtown neighborhoods, along the Lakefront and at Navy Pier for the fireworks display and throughout the July 4th long weekend," Reilly said. #rivernorth #chicago #shooting #july4th #navypier #safety
