The oldest dream in aerospace is an aircraft that lifts off from a runway, climbs to the edge of the atmosphere, and keeps going straight to orbit. No jettisoned stages, no expendable tanks. A vehicle that leaves like a plane and arrives in space.
Why this is so brutally hard comes down to one thing: heat.
A rocket carries its own oxidiser, so it works anywhere, but it must haul every tonne of liquid oxygen uphill. An air-breathing engine instead scoops oxygen from the atmosphere, which is far more efficient. The problem is speed. Above roughly Mach 5, the air rammed into the intake is compressed and decelerated so violently that it heats to around 1,000°C before it ever reaches the engine.
Feed thousand-degree air into a compressor and everything downstream suffers:
- The metal is pushed toward its thermal limits
- Little temperature headroom is left to extract useful thrust
- Combustion turns unstable and inefficient
