Common Defense on Instagram: "Freedom in Texas did not arrive on its own. It was carried there. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger stood on the balcony of Ashton Villa in Galveston and read General Orders No. 3: "The people of Texas are informed that all slaves are free." But two weeks earlier, it was the 25th Army Corps, the single largest African American unit of the Union Army and the only all-Black Army corps in US history, that captured Galveston and helped liberate thousands. Black soldiers did not just fight for this country. They fought to make its promise real. That is the legacy we carry forward. As Malcolm X said, it is freedom for everybody or freedom for nobody. This Juneteenth, we honor the troops who turned a proclamation into liberation, and we recommit to the fight for a country where liberty and justice truly belong to all. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #BlackHistory #Veterans #25thArmyCorps"
