Two hundred and fifty years this week into the American experiment, good to remember John Lewis’ words: “Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.” The future of this country has always depended on people choosing to participate, to learn, and to stand up for and seek its highest ideals, even if at times fall short.
