Researchers at the University of Minnesota have created SpudCell, the first synthetic cell assembled from nonliving chemical components that can complete a full life cycle. It grows, replicates its DNA, divides, and competes across generations.
Importantly, SpudCell is not considered fully alive. It still relies on externally supplied molecular machinery. But demonstrating an entire cellular life cycle in a synthetic system is an extraordinary scientific achievement.
