He had been rehearsing the line for six months.
Six months of "hey, so listen" in the mirror. Six months of almost-texts deleted at 11pm. Six months of manufactured reasons to walk past her desk -- printer issues, phantom snack runs, one deeply unnecessary question about the stapler.
Today was the day.
He had the line. He had the shirt. He had on his lucky hat. He had a mint.
He walked up. She looked up. Time slowed.
"Hey, so listen--"
"Oh my god," she said. "I'm so glad you came over. Can you cover my shift Friday? I'm going to my boyfriend's thing."
"...Yeah, totally."
He covered the shift.
He also ate an entire sleeve of Oreos in the parking lot.

Make it. We want to screen it.
