🎉🩺 July is the month when new doctors who have recently graduated from medical school start in hospitals. For many years, there was concern about a possible “July Effect” 📅, in which patients experience increased numbers of complications as a result of there being inexperienced doctors taking care of them. 📚 However, a 2023 meta-analysis of 113 studies on the topic published in the Annals of Surgery found that there is no July Effect, as the number of hospital complications does not increase during the month of July compared to other months (PMID: 33914485). ✅ 🤔 So your odds of experiencing a complication are basically the same in July as they are during any other month, which may surprise some people. 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ New resident doctors may appear young, but they have completed 4 years of medical school 🎓 and extensive time on the clinical wards.
