These are the ingredients I try to avoid in laundry detergent:
1,4-Dioxane — EPA-classified likely carcinogen. Not on the label because it’s a byproduct, not an added ingredient.
Optical Brighteners — UV-reactive chemicals engineered to stay on your fabric permanently. Toxic to aquatic life and linked to skin reactions.
SLS/SLES — Common surfactants that irritate skin and introduce more 1,4-dioxane contamination.
MI/MCI Preservatives — Among the top contact allergens flagged by dermatologists. Restricted in the EU, largely unregulated here.
Artificial Dyes — Petroleum-derived, zero cleaning function, linked to skin reactions and hyperactivity in kids.
The common thread: possible skin sensitization, endocrine disruption, and carcinogenicity — in a product you wear for 16 hours a day.
