The Greeks constructed a massive wooden horse, hiding a select force of men inside. The rest of the Greek army pretended to retreat, leaving the horse at the gates of Troy as a supposed offering to Athena for a safe voyage home. The Trojans, believing they had won the war and thinking the horse a peace offering or a votive for their victory, debated what to do with it. Despite warnings from Laocoön, a Trojan priest, and Cassandra, a prophetess cursed to be always accurate yet never believed, the Trojans decided to bring the horse into the city as a trophy. In the dead of night, after the Trojans celebrated what they believed was their victory, the Greek warriors emerged from the horse.
