You've likely heard the tragic news about how a Royal Caribbean mega-cruise ship arrived at port in Alaska recently, with a dead endangered fin whale on the bow. We don't need to share a photo to illustrate how grim the scene was. Federal officials determined that the whale was pregnant and had suffered blunt force trauma to the spine, ribs and jaw — consistent with a ship strike. This tragedy shouldn't have happened. And we want to ensure it never happens again. Speed limits for vessels are a proven, immediate solution to whale deaths. Research shows that limiting vessels' speed to 10 knots or slower dramatically reduces the risk and lethality of collisions. We're urging NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Coast Guard to require vessel speed limits where whales are most likely to be.
